Job Description

The mission of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.

The Center for Aircraft Structural Life Extension (CAStLE) was established within the USAFA Mechanical Engineering department in 1995. CAStLE research focuses on education, analysis, and technical solutions related to structural corrosion, fatigue, and all other forms of material degradation. The CAStLE Applied Mechanics Laboratory (AML) employs state-of-the-art test, analysis, and fabrication tools through a highly capable team consisting of cadets, military, civilian, and contractors. Projects include a wide range of efforts in support of government, academic, and commercial research programs.

Aleut Aerospace Engineering is a certified 8(a) Alaska Native Corporation that manages the Advisory and Assistance Services Contract at USAFA to provide professional technical support to a wide variety of activities. Aleut’s mission mirrors that of USAFA, with an integrity-centric team focused on delivery of exceptional solutions, service, and value.

Aleut Aerospace Engineering is currently searching for Research Laboratory Technicians to support CAStLE programs.

Required Skills

Position responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Support cadet laboratory and research design in association with USAFA Mechanical Engineering classes
  • Support non-cadet CAStLE AML efforts to include:
    • Mechanical/environmental testing
    • Material processing
    • Material analysis
    • Material characterization
    • Prototype, component, and test specimen design, modeling, fabrication, and assembly
  • Assess and refine equipment and facility operating procedures
  • Assist with test and manufacturing equipment upgrades, acquisitions, and reductions
  • Assess facility management plans and support execution of those plans
Required Experience

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a toolmaker/machinist
  • Materials research lab experience with a focus on safety is required
  • Experience with CAStLE test and evaluation hardware, CNC machining hardware, and laboratory processes is highly desired
  • An understanding of military ranks and protocol is highly desired
  • Proficiency in Office and project software is required to include: MS Word, MS Power Point, and MS Excel
  • The ability to operate, or learn to operate the following equipment is required:
    • CNC mills and lathes
    • Electro-static Discharge Machines (EDM) – both wire and plunge
    • Rapid prototype machines to include: 5th gen Makerbot, Stratasys 360 and 380, Object 30 Pro and 260 Connext3, Markedforged Mark Two and Metal X
    • X-ray CT scan (NDI and high precision reverse engineering)
    • Wet/dry composite layup
    • Heat table – high ΔT, ΔP
    • High and low speed saws
    • Wire saw cutter
    • Plasma cutter
    • Tungsten and Metal Insert Gas (TIG and MIG) welders
    • Surface grinders
    • Water jet cutters
    • Standard wood and metal workshop machines and tools
    • High (2200°F) and ultra-high temperature (310000°F) furnaces
